She attacks him, and Heinrich flees, bleeding. Heinrich calls Mark and begs him to pick him up. Mark stops by Anna's apartment first and discovers the body parts; the creature, however, is gone.
Mark goes to the bar where he knocks Heinrich out with a cistern lid and drowns him in a toilet, staging it as an accidental death. He then lights Anna's apartment on fire before fleeing on Heinrich's motorcycle.
At home, he finds Anna's friend Margie bleeding heavily in the elevator. He drags her into his apartment and leaves her to die in the bathroom.
Anna greets him, and the two have sex in the kitchen before she leaves again. Afterward, he makes plans to cover up Margie's death and hides her corpse in the trunk of his car.
That evening, Mark receives a phone call from Heinrich's mother asking for details about her son. He promises to visit her after he finds Anna.
Before his search, Mark drops Bob off at Helen's apartment. Mark's search leads him to Margie's house, where he discovers Anna having sex with the creature which is beginning to take a human form.
Mark quickly leaves and goes to meet with Heinrich's mother. After the two speak for a short while and his mother confirms that Heinrich is dead, she commits suicide by poisoning herself.
The next day, as Mark wanders the street, he meets up with his former business associates. He is evasive and returns to Margie's house to find it surrounded by police and his former employers.
He stages a distraction by crashing a taxi into the cars parked outside the house, allowing someone, possibly Anna, to sneak away in his car. Mark is shot and wounded by police as he flees.
As he drives away on a motorcycle, Mark crashes and injures himself further before racing into a building where he is pursued by Anna, the police, and his business associates.
Anna reveals the creature, now fully formed as Mark's doppelgänger but with green eyes. Mark raises his gun to shoot it but he and Anna are gunned down by a hail of bullets from the police below.
Bloodied and dying, Anna lies atop Mark and uses his gun to shoot herself. She dies in his arms and he jumps to his death from the stairwell.
The doppelgänger flees through the roof. Later, Helen is at the flat babysitting Bob when the doorbell rings. Bob implores her not to open the door, but Helen ignores him and approaches the door.
Bob races through the apartment into the bathroom, where he jumps into the filled bathtub and floats face-down in the water. Helen stands at the front door of the apartment.
From outside, the sound of sirens, planes, and explosions fill the air. The silhouette of Mark's doppelgänger is seen behind the frosted glass door.
Helen stares onwards and her green eyes begin to illuminate. The genre of the film is still a matter of controversy. Hoberman notes:.
A number of critics deny the creature with tentacles in physical reality — it may be a reflection of Anna's psychosis, the product of Mark's inflamed consciousness: unable to accept his wife's betrayal,  or a kind of revenge of the director traumatized by his own divorce from his ex-wife.
Many writers about Possession have paid attention to the motive of doppelgänger throughout the film. Both spouses die, but they are replaced by doubles, ideal models of husband and wife.
Anna "grows" a double of Mark from the creature, an indefatigable lover who is always by her side. The real Mark finds a copy of Anna in the person of the school teacher Helena — she is a gentle character, and does not demand anything from Mark, being an ideal housewife.
As in the case of The Devil , the director placed political subtext under the layer of expressive horror after deliberately choosing Berlin as it was the least remote point from Poland and other countries of the European social camp.
The film contains elements of a spy thriller. Mark, an intelligence agent, leaves his job for his family.
Anna leaves her family to become an "agent of the dark forces". The confrontation ends with death for both, and in the last frames of the film, there is a direct allusion the sounds of sirens and the rumble of explosions on the armed conflict that began in the city divided in two, which could end in a nuclear apocalypse.
While emigrating, he did not give up on suicidal thoughts, which he had initially been able to get rid of by starting to work on a new film. By this time, Adjani had already become a celebrity , but the producers had reasons to expect that she would accept the offer.
After an unsuccessful attempt to start a career in Hollywood released in , Walter Hill 's The Driver failed at the box office , Adjani decided to return to European cinema.
She starred in Nosferatu the Vampyre , but it had not yet been possible to repeat her success in being nominated for the Academy Award for her role in The Story of Adele H.
Sam Neill , a less well-known actor and a fellow actor of Davis in the same film, was chosen for the role of Mark. Davis was hesitating over whether to take the role, so Adjani eventually accepted the offer.
The role was emotionally exhausting for Adjani. In one of the interviews, she stated that it took her several years to recover from, which J. Hoberman called "a veritable aria of hysteria ".
There were two takes. This scene was filmed at five in the morning, when the subway was closed. I knew it was worth a lot of effort for [Adjani], both emotionally and physically, because it was cold there.

Yeah, Possession. The First time I saw this film I was catatonic by the end. My 3 friends and I talked about it so much we got 4 new friends to watch it with us again.
Because this isn't really a horror film. Yeah, there's a "monster", but only in America would this get relegated to the "Horror" genre. Because here, we usually make films to fit in a box, follow a formula or entertain, not as a catharsis for the director.
Wake up my friends; not everything in life fits in tidy packages or makes rational sense. Several years ago there was an amazing fan site to this man's work which doesn't seem to exist anymore that went into infinite detail about his films and personal life.
Suffice to say, there's much more going on here than you think. During 's and 80's Poland, all films were approved by the Polish film commission and Zulawski's second film "Diabel" was banned.
Made in Polish, "Diabel" was essentially cut off from it's only possible audience. He took a trip to France, ended up making a film and then returned to his homeland.
He worked on yet another film for two years which the authorities did not allow him to finish.
Since then he has basically lived and worked successfully in France. I read an interview where he talked about how his personal identity was in crisis at the time due to his divorce and being for all intents and purposes exiled from his homeland.
The first part is indeed a drama centering around a couple who's marriage is falling apart. As their discord escalates, it becomes a horror film with some scenes taking place only in the psyche of the wife.
The last part is an action film, driving the frenzied pace even higher through chase sequences. There are many lines of dialog especially in exchanges between Heinz and Sam Neill that were written as critique of his treatment by the government of Poland.
